This blog post will be rather quick, as I have a lot of work to do for Bar Exam stuff, but I just wanted to wish everyone a happy 4th of July!! Happy Birthday America! This year, I decided to try out the “American Flag Cake” created by 17 and Baking with a great version by Glorious Treats. Below, I have included an instructional video on how to make and assemble the cake, and it’s a nice way for you to get to know me better! Please check it out! I will also post some pictures from the process and let you know how it went. The picture above is after the cake had melted for about 3-4 hours so if you served it cold it probably wouldn’t be so messy but sometimes I think messy is more beautiful than perfect.
The Elements: Basically what you want to have is enough white cake batter to make 2 red cakes (4 layers), 1 white cake (2 layers), and 1 blue cake (2 layers). You can use any white cake recipe you love or even a box cake if it’s easier. Then you need to separate the batter into bowls and dye them to the colors you want (red/blue etc.) and it was easiest for me to work in batches, making all the red cakes first and then the blue and white cakes at the same time.
For the icing, you can again use any icing you prefer. The icing doesn’t have to be a “white” icing as long as it is light enough that you can tint it with white food coloring gel to make it really white! Again, here you could even use a pre-made icing if you’d like.

I had attempted to make the swiss meringue buttercream icing from Sweetapolita. However, it ended up being a disaster. I’m kind of short on time these days because of the bar exam, so rather than start from scratch, I caved and bought store bought icing and then used my food coloring to dye that. It still tasted good and saved me a lot of time but I would have preferred to make my own icing. Oh well, another time right? So, this recipe can actually be quite easy if you use a store-bought cake box and store-bought icing. Hope you enjoy the pictures and instructional videos! Also, my cake had sat out in the sun for about 3-4 hours before serving it…I would recommend serving it cold…it still tasted delicious but didn’t look as neat and pretty as it could have…the stars ended up melting and it looked more like fireworks, which I still thought was cool
