This Maple Cranberry Apple Sangria is a great alternative to beer for the Big Game. The cranberry and apple flavors are a winter’s delight, and maple syrup instead of sugar adds a fun New England flair!
It’s almost that time of year again! The Big Game is upon us, and it’s time for the third and final recipe from Football Foodies! We started out with “tailgate-theme” foods, for which I posted these Chowder Stuffed Jalapeño Poppers. Then we had “team-theme” which brought us New England Rum Punch. Now it’s “Big Game theme” and I’m sticking with the theme “drinking keeps people warm” theme and bringing you another cocktail!

We are just big fans — and we want to share our love for our teams, the game and the food that brings us all together on game day.
To keep in line with the representation of my husband’s favorite team, I took to Google to look for typical New England foods, hoping it would give me a good idea for a recipe. I saw the standards: lobster, clam chowder (or chowdAH), seafood bakes, etc. I wanted something a little different though. Suddenly I stumbled upon the sweeter side of New England: cranberries, apples, and maple syrup. Instantly I wanted these winter gems in this post… and something to imbibe on is always appropriate for watching that final game! This recipe is based off of my Champagne Sangria, which is one of my more popular recipes, and one that I keep in my regular rotation for entertaining. When using maple syrup instead of sugar, it’s wise to use a little less, because it’s so much more concentrated. You will see that reflected in the recipe below.
Be sure to look past the recipe as well, to see what all the other Football Foodies are making for the Big Game! Maybe you’ll get a great idea! And I hope you’ll make this Maple Cranberry Sangria for your party, if you have one…it’s great for a crowd!
- ½ cup Brandy
- splash of Cointreau (or other orange liqueur)
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 2 bottles of dry white wine (I prefer Sauvignon Blanc but Pinot Grigio is an excellent choice as well) (750 ML)
- 2 granny smith apples, sliced thin
- 2 honey crisp apples, sliced thin
- 1 cup frozen cranberries
- Juice from ½ lemon
- ¼ cup or so of champagne or prosecco (just splashes)
- Ice cubes (optional)
- In a large mixing bowl or pitcher, add Brandy and Cointreau, then the maple syrup, and stir to incorporate as much as possible.
- Add wine and stir.
- Add all fruit and squeeze lemon juice on top then stir.
- Let chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.
- After removing from fridge, stir again to incorporate all ingredients and to ensure syrup hasn't sunk to the bottom.
- Add ice cubes to glasses before serving, if you prefer. Pour sangria into a glass about ⅔ the way full. Top with a splash of prosecco in each.
